Ahmed Aboutaleb

Mayor of the City of Rotterdam

Rotterdam is proud to host the quadrennial maritime symposium of the International Association of Marine Aids and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) in 2021. My city has a lot to offer. Besides an innovative world class port, Rotterdam is a young, dynamic city, internationally renowned for its innovative drive, unpolished charm and can-do mentality.

In the port of Rotterdam volumes are large and logistics complex, reaching 500 million European consumers within 24 hours by road, rail, pipe and water. The focus in Rotterdam lies on sustainability and more efficient use of all modes of transport. Being a first class maritime hub also requires investments on safety: maritime safety and safety on land as well, to prevent criminal business from entering port and city.

Rotterdam has over fifty specialized maritime and logistics study programs ranging from secondary vocation education to university education levels – all of them frontrunners in their field. This connects perfectly with the goals of the IALA Symposiume to bring together all key players and discuss the challenges we face.

In Rotterdam, the Maritime Capital of Europe you will find a platform to develop, test and ultimately implement your digital solutions. Solutions contributing to ongoing developments related to the safety of navigation, the efficient handling of shipping and maritime services. I am looking forward to welcome all IALA delegates and the maritime community online via the livestream broadcast from the studio in Rotterdam!
